Horsepower for Healing: Revving Up Connection, Reducing Stigma in Port Alberni

Horsepower for Healing brought the Port Alberni community together through classic cars, music, and meaningful conversations about mental health and substance use. Hosted by the Port Alberni Community Action Team and supported by Citaapi Mahtii, the event aimed to break down stigma and create a safe, welcoming space for healing and connection.

Hey everyone, it’s Jude here, checking in from Horsepower for Healing—a powerful and uplifting event hosted by the Port Alberni Community Action Team and supported by Citaapi Mahtii. This incredible community gathering is about more than just beautiful cars—it’s about creating a safe, welcoming space where real conversations can happen. We were honoured to be joined by one of our inspiring community leaders, Christina Brack, co-chair of the Community Action Team, who shared the heart behind the event.

“Today we’re at our community car show, bringing together classic and performance vehicles in a warm and inviting atmosphere. We’re using this space to open up conversations around mental health and substance use—in a way that feels accessible and non-judgmental.”

The event featured local service providers, a fantastic DJ, and delicious food—drawing people from all over the community to connect, engage, and support one another. But beneath the fun and celebration is a serious and urgent mission: to reduce deaths related to the toxic drug supply and overdose crisis.

“Men in particular are among the most at-risk populations when it comes to toxic drug overdoses,” Christina said. “It’s a tragic reality—and that’s why we want to normalize these conversations, eliminate stigma, and remove the guilt, shame, and isolation that so often accompany mental health challenges.”

The goal is clear: bring these discussions out of the shadows and into the light—into our kitchen tables, workplaces, and everyday conversations. Because healing starts with connection, and support begins with understanding.

At Citaapi Mahtii, we believe in creating safe spaces where everyone feels valued, supported, and free from judgment. Life is hard sometimes—we all face challenges. But in Port Alberni, no one has to go through it alone.

We want to extend a huge thank you to the Port Alberni Community Action Team, all of our volunteers, service providers, and attendees. Together, we’re building a stronger, healthier, and more compassionate community.

Let’s keep the conversation going. Let’s keep showing up. And let’s keep creating spaces where healing is possible.

Klecko, Klecko!
