Cedarwood Citaapi Mahtii Receives Award of Excellence in Affordable Housing

Citaapi Mahtii Housing Society is honoured to announce that Cedarwood Citaapi Mahtii in Port Alberni has received the Award of Excellence in Affordable Housing at the 19th Annual Vancouver Island Commercial Building Awards, held in Nanaimo on April 30th.

The project was selected as the winner from a group of four finalists in the affordable housing category. The award recognises the collaboration, vision, and hard work that went into creating a safe, stable, and culturally supportive housing development for community members.

Greg shared the exciting news following the event:

“Last night I attended the 19th Annual Commercial Building Awards in Nanaimo.
We were 1 of 4 chosen for the award.
Great news … we were selected to receive the award.”

The Award of Excellence in Affordable Housing was sponsored by Coastal Community Credit Union and presented to Cedarwood Citaapi Mahtii, located at 4210 Cedarwood Street in Port Alberni.

This four-storey, 35-unit development was designed to provide long-term housing that reflects both the practical and cultural needs of residents. The building includes a mix of studio suites, accessible one-bedroom units, as well as two-, three-, and four-bedroom homes to support individuals, couples, families, Elders, and multi-generational households.

The project primarily serves members of the Ahousaht First Nation with low- to moderate-income, helping to address the ongoing need for affordable and supportive housing in the region.

The recognition also highlights the strong partnerships that helped bring the project to life. The development team included:

  • Owner: Citaapi Mahtii Housing Society / Ahousaht
  • General Contractor: IWCD
  • Architect and Designer: DYS Architecture
  • Electrical: Osprey Electric

Greg noted that representatives from IWCD also attended the awards ceremony, recognising their important role in building and managing the project’s construction.

Cedarwood Citaapi Mahtii stands as more than just a building. It represents a commitment to creating housing rooted in dignity, safety, community, and cultural connection. Developments like this help create stronger futures for families while supporting long-term community wellness and stability.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who contributed their time, skill, and leadership to this project. Receiving this award is an important milestone, but more importantly, it reflects the impact that safe and supportive housing can have on people’s lives.
