On Monday, March 2, the Citaapi Mahtii building hosted a very special evening that brought tenants, board members, and community members together for a shared meal and cultural gathering. The dinner was a wonderful success and marked an important moment as one of the first cultural events held in our Citaapi Mahtii Gathering Space.
The evening was made possible through the generosity of Maaqutusiis Hahoutlhee Stewardship Society (MHSS), who gifted two large turkeys along with all the fixings needed to prepare a full dinner. Their contribution helped create a warm and welcoming meal for everyone in attendance.
Preparing the dinner was truly a community effort. Several tenants volunteered their time and worked tirelessly throughout the day to bring everything together. From preparing the turkeys to organizing the side dishes, the kitchen was full of activity and collaboration. One of our tenants also prepared chumus, adding a special homemade touch that completed the meal and reflected the spirit of sharing and care within the building.
As the evening continued, the gathering moved beyond dinner and into celebration. We were honoured to welcome Ahousaht drummers and singers, whose songs brought energy and meaning to the evening. Before long, tenants were up dancing and enjoying the music together. The combination of food, song, and community created an atmosphere that many described as both joyful and meaningful.
By the end of the night, people left the gathering space with full bellies and full hearts. Events like this remind us that Citaapi Mahtii is more than just a place to live—it is a place where relationships are formed, culture is shared, and community continues to grow.
